The Protein Paradox: Elucidating the Complex Nutritional Ecology of the Invasive Berry Pest, Spotted-Wing Drosophila (Diptera: Drosophila suzukii)

چکیده

Spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii , has become one of the most widely studied insect species over last decade, largely due to its recent invasion and rapid expansion across Americas Europe. Unlike other drosophilid species, which colonize rotting fruit, SWD females possess a serrated ovipositor that allows them lay eggs in intact ripening causing significant economic problems for fruit/berry producers worldwide. Though an impressive amount research been conducted on SWD's ecology physiology, aspects their nutritional remain ambiguous. This review synthesizes date provide more comprehensive view relationship with fruit hosts associated microbes. Overall, data suggest ability utilize novel resources is likely changes ecological, rather than physiological, niche are mediated by microbial associations. Studies show nutrient intake comparable indicating limited adaptation feeding lower-protein resources. Instead, protein content reliable predictor host suitability fruit-microbe dynamics have strong impact availability. In particularly, increases after infestation SWD-associated microbes, suggesting initially-suboptimal fruits can protein-rich timeframe relevant larval nutrition. body work suggests associations between flies compensate differences these relationships responsible expanded niche.

Genome of Drosophila suzukii, the Spotted Wing Drosophila

Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (spotted wing drosophila) has recently become a serious pest of a wide variety of fruit crops in the United States as well as in Europe, leading to substantial yearly crop losses. To enable basic and applied research of this important pest, we sequenced the D. suzukii genome to obtain a high-quality reference sequence. Here, we discuss the basic properties of the ge...

Peptidergic control in a fruit crop pest: The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii

Neuropeptides play an important role in the regulation of feeding in insects and offer potential targets for the development of new chemicals to control insect pests. A pest that has attracted much recent attention is the highly invasive Drosophila suzukii, a polyphagous pest that can cause serious economic damage to soft fruits. Previously we showed by mass spectrometry the presence of the neu...

Nutritional geometry and fitness consequences in Drosophila suzukii, the Spotted‐Wing Drosophila

Since its arrival to North America less than a decade ago, the invasive Spotted-Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) has inflicted substantial economic losses on soft fruit agriculture due to its ability to oviposit into ripening fruits. More effective management approaches for this species are needed, but little is known about the factors that influence behavioral choices made by D. suzukii wh...

Associations of yeasts with spotted-wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii; Diptera: Drosophilidae) in cherries and raspberries.

A rich history of investigation documents various Drosophila-yeast mutualisms, suggesting that Drosophila suzukii similarly has an association with a specific yeast species or community. To discover candidate yeast species, yeasts were isolated from larval frass, adult midguts, and fruit hosts of D. suzukii. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) technology and decimal diluti...

In Focus: Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, across perspectives.

In August 2008, the first detection of the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, to the North America mainland in California caused great concern, as the fly was found infesting a variety of commercial fruits. Subsequent detections followed in Oregon, Washington, Florida and British Columbia in 2009; in Utah, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and Louisiana in 2010; and in Virgini...
